Frequently
Asked Questions
How do I repair my 3D printed board if it gets a ding?
Repairing your 3D printed board is similar to repairing traditional surfboards. First, clean the area around the ding, ensuring it's dry and free from debris. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges. For deeper dings that reach the internal structure or PETG skin, we provide a PETG 3D pen that allows you to precisely fill these areas before applying the final layer. Once the area is prepped, apply a solar-resin or epoxy resin suitable for your board's material—preferably a bio-based resin to maintain sustainability. Allow it to cure in the sun or as directed by the product. Finally, sand the area smooth once it's cured.
How long is my 3D printed board expected to last?
Swellcycle boards are designed to last as long as traditional surfboards, depending on usage and care. With proper maintenance, your 3D printed board can last for many years. The innovative materials and manufacturing process make it durable, but like all surfboards, its lifespan will depend on how often it's used and how well it's taken care of.
What's the average weight of a 3D printed board vs. a traditional polyurethane (PU) board?
The weight of a surfboard is an important factor in its performance and handling. Our 3D printed boards are engineered to be very close in weight to traditional polyurethane (PU) boards, with only minor differences. Typically, a 3D printed board is slightly heavier or approximately equal in weight to a traditional PU board, depending on the specific model and size. This slight increase is due to the dense internal lattice structure, which enhances the board's strength and flexibility.
What's the best way to take care of my 3D printed board?
To ensure the longevity of your 3D printed board:
- Rinse with fresh water after each use to remove salt and sand.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when not in use.
- Store in a cool, shaded area, ideally in a board bag to prevent dings and
scratches. - Handle with care to avoid impacts or pressure dings.
- Check regularly for any dings or cracks and repair them promptly to prevent water damage.
Are 3D printed surfboards environmentally friendly?
Yes, Swellcycle 3D printed boards are designed with sustainability in mind. They are made from recycled materials, like PETG from hospital trays, and use bio-based resins. This approach significantly reduces the environmental footprint compared to traditional surfboard manufacturing processes.
Can I customize the design of my 3D printed surfboard?
We’re working hard to make custom orders possible. We’re currently developing campaigns to be able to partner with local shapers in order to develop custom orders for clients that want a Swellcycle technology board.
