Sustainable Surfboards: SwellCycle Turns Plastic Hospital Waste into Unique Boards

SwellCycle, a Santa Cruz-based startup, is making waves with its innovative approach to surfboard manufacturing. Founded on the principles of sustainability and powered by cutting-edge 3D printing technology, SwellCycle transforms recycled hospital waste into high-performance surfboards.

  • Founded by Patricio Guerrero, Nathan Jackarzi, and Pol Riera, SwellCycle was born from a deep-seated commitment to environmental stewardship and a passion for surfing. The idea germinated when Guerrero, frustrated by the waste generated from traditional surfboard repair, turned to 3D printing as a sustainable alternative.
  • SwellCycle utilizes recycled plastic packaging from hospital equipment, sourced globally, to create its surfboards. This material, once melted down into filament, forms the basis for SwellCycle's environmentally friendly boards, which are both durable and performance-oriented.
  • The SwellCycle team rigorously tests their boards in real-world conditions, ensuring they perform as well as conventional boards. Their dedication has attracted notable surfers like Tyler Fox and Grant "Twiggy" Baker, who have endorsed the boards after testing them in challenging surf conditions.
